For Thursday, 6/30

Prep

  • Murray Forman, ‘Represent: Race, Space, and Place in Rap Music’, in Forman and Neal (2012)

No one contacted me yesterday evening wondering about access to this article, so I assume no one’s read it yet. It’s pretty dense. But I don’t want to fatigue anybody after the last couple of dense articles we’ve looked at: you can lightly skim this one, make note of any parts you’d like to talk about in depth, and we’ll deal with those in class. We’ll try to devote most of our time to the proposal outlines.

FORMAN, MURRAY_REPRESENT_pp.247-269

Zoom Session

  1. Attendance
  2. Q&A: TBA
  3. Reading Notes for Next Time

For Next Time

  • Davarian Baldwin, ‘Black Empires, White Desires: The Spatial Politics of Identity in the Age of Hip-Hop’, in Forman and Neal (2012)
BALDWIN, DAVARIAN_BLACK EMPIRES, WHITE DESIRES_pp.228-246

For Tuesday, 28 June

  • Matt Miller, ‘Rap’s Dirty South: From Subculture to Pop Culture’, in Forman and Neal (2012)
MILLER, MATT_RAP'S DIRTY SOUTH_pp.270-293

Sorry for the change of plans, but now that we’ve talked a little bit about what was going on in Houston at that time, let’s take a look at some of the other regional scenes then rising in the south, as well as the way they all ended up being lumped together as the ‘Dirty South’.

There is no new reading today: we didn’t really dig into McLeod’s article yesterday, so we’ll cover that today. I’ve posted a non-password-protected PDF of it on Slack in the #general channel.
